Welcome to ShotwellRVA! I am a photographer and writer in the Richmond, VA, area.

I focus most of my photography in the digital realm, though I have been shooting film since the days when it was the only option. My photographic education has mainly been outside of any formal program or class. I don’t believe anyone is ever finished learning how to “be a photographer”. I study others’ work, I ask questions about other’s methods, I read and study about photography, and I just practice as often as possible.

Portraits are where I focus most of my energy – sometimes traditional, sometimes more creative/editorial. My main goal when doing portrait work is to capture more than my subject’s appearance. My goal is to capture a piece of their story, maybe even a window into their spirit.

As for my writing, I focus on verse. I have not published most of my work, but I am working on it! My words come together often as a means of working through something in my life. As such, my poems are pieces of me. To put them out in the world is a bit stressful and scary. My goal is to work through this anxiety and publish more of them – both on my blog and in print.
